Did you know that the first nylon bristled toothbrush with a plastic handle was invented right on the cusp of World War II, in 1938? Today, toothbrushes are a big part of affordable dental care, and for those who want to avoid porcelain veneers or dental implant surgery, using a toothbrush at least two times a day is mandatory.
In truth, toothbrushes date back to 3500 BC, when the Babylonian people used sticks from aromatic trees as chewing sticks. They would chew these sticks until they became ragged in order to clean their teeth. Today, people can use real toothbrushes and even eat sesame seeds, which have been shown to reduce plaque and help build tooth enamel. It also doesn’t hurt that they’re full of calcium.
Tooth enamel is the hardest surface in the human body, but often people neglect their oral hygiene. Fortunately, there are dental practices that offer dental surgery like implants, and non invasive cosmetic procedures like porcelain veneers. Implants are generally used as replacements for the root of missing teeth, and are most often made of titanium. Implants are rooted into the jawbone, then the jaw heals around the implant, rooting and anchoring the tooth in place.
It is not mandatory to take care of one’s teeth, although studies have shown that teeth are a very important part of how attractive one looks to other people. Ultimately, there are cosmetic dental procedures that can fix dental mistakes, but by and large, keeping good oral hygiene traditions can help people feel good about the appearance of their teeth. My parents taught me the importance of taking care of your teeth. My siblings and I had to brush our teeth sometimes three times a day and floss in front of our parents every night while we still lived at home. I do have nice teeth though.
